Selling

When I began my selling education I was told all selling is is the ability to communicate well. Maybe one reason why people have so many problem is because they haven't learned how to communicate well. They can tout their own beliefs yet they don't know how to understand others beliefs.
I love selling and learning more about it. I love finding great products and services and sharing it with people I care about. Most people who know me get used to the fact that if I come across something that I think is important I will be sharing it with them. Most of my family just rolls their eyes and humors me. Understanding communication has helped me see the world through the eyes of others which has allowed me to learn fast.
Most people, i think, hate selling because people think a salesperson is someone who makes you do something you don't want to do. They don't want to lose. It is a lack mentality. By being open to listening to sales people I have been able to learn more about things that are important to my family and I. I love listening to sales people and often do buy because I find what they have is important. I get junk mail so I can learn what are other things out there, what are others selling, and how are they marketing and what can I learn from it.

Sell a bad word

one reason is we have all been taken at one time or another. So we become skeptical. Telemarketing a legitimate business has became so irresponsible the honest get hurt. The sins of some hurt all!
Also buyers remorse is always blamed on the salesman. People seldom take responsibility for their poor decisions.

Maybe Because Its A Four Letter Word!!!!!!!!

Or maybe because people don't realize that if everyone on the planet was wired mentally, so that they couldn't sell, prosperity as we know it wouldn't exist. Or aha! Maybe the poor have been cheated so many times by poorly designed companies and bad products that they don't trust anyone selling anything anymore.

I am not a natural salesperson. I am sure we have all met them. Those people with charisma, passion, and a silver tongue that can sell ice to uhh...Inuit's, Native North Americans - pick whichever is least offensive... (is THAT even allowed to be said anymore?)

When Robert first wrote about sales abilities, I shrugged it off. Real Estate Riches by Dolf De Roos is my absolute favorite book on Real estate investing, and one of his rules for success is "Seldom Sell". I used that as an excuse not to develop the skill.

When I moved back to the states, I took up a job - any job. I sold telecom packages business to business (yeah, I was THAT guy!).

Honestly...I was terrible. The only thing that kept me going was that I talked different to most folks in the area, and they were interested in what I had to say, just because I had an accent.

I saw others in my office who were 'Rockstar's' in the field. I learned everything I could from them, and I figured out, sales is a conversational skill. You can always tell when you are talking to a good salesperson - they can guide the conversation in the direction they want. They are in control of themselves, the words they use, their gestures, and, if they are good, they're cleverly guiding you to a sale.

I'm not a salesperson, I'm a jock/geek, and not much in between. I'm very comfortable in front of a computer, or with my head in a book, or chasing a basketball - talking to absolute strangers was petrifying to me in the sales job in the beginning. But I learned that most people are not in control of the words that are coming out of their mouth.

If you are not in control of your words, someone else is (provided you're not talking to yourself of course). Sales, is an excellent, very underrated skill for success. Anyone who thinks otherwise - has never been good at sales.

Sales, teaching, and learning

The word "sell" is basically what I do every day when I teach. I teach both high school and college students. I have to sell them my ideas - lessons. Many students don't come to school wanting to learn -or even excited about learning. So, I have to sell the learning before they can begin to open up and expand their minds. I figure part of what I do is sales, and part of what I do is acting - both sales and acting go hand in hand. (Sorry if few of you have looked at teachers this way - but I have to have excitement and passion about all that I teach - or it impacts students and they do not want to learn anything.) Whether you want to put on the smile and go on for the crowd to sell your ideas, isn't really a choice. Life is about selling.

I may see selling a little differently than many. My parents own an advertising business - and my father is one of the sales people. From being a little girl - my father has always been in sales, and I have never seen it as a "dirty" job like many. But - I also have watched my father work as a sales person with integrity - which I know of other businesses in town similar to my parents, who do not work with integrity.

As some have pointed out - one bad apple, gives the impression that all are bad in that bushel.

The Word Sell

I think so because so much of what has been sold doesn't do what it is reported to do; this includes politics as well as what we experience in our jobs. Integrity in a product or service, and the experience people actually get when they buy something they really don't need or within seconds of purchase, want.

The word "sell" has a negative ring to it because....

I feel that most people have been through experiences where they had been given a hard sell or the salesperson felt very pushy or even too anxious or obnoxious trying to sell something that wasn't wanted or particularly needed. So based on those events many people begin to believe that that is what selling is all about.

Also, many of us have been sold something by a salesperson that sounded great when we bought it but then felt cheated afterwards. Due to that we become very cautious of salespeople because we began to feel that all they care about is making money. Another thing is that there are a lot of scams out there and many times its hard to know whose telling the truth about what they're offering.

All in all, generally I believe this is why most people are afraid of sales and salespeople. But with anything in life, the more educated you become about sales and how its done properly, it becomes very easy and fun to do and possibly you may become wealthy doing it. I heard this saying that changed my whole view about sales: "Sales is helping people make decisions that are good for them". Keep that in mind guys!!
